SALVADOR “DON CHAVA” RODRIGUEZ SALOMON, 95, of Mesilla, entered eternal life Sunday, August 28, 2022, at his residence, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was born on May 21, 1927, in Villa Union, Durango, Mexico, to Maria Salomon Martinez. He was known to many as "Don Chava" and served his life as a farmer in the Mesilla Valley. He retired in 1990 from New Mexico State University after 25 years as a Heavy Equipment Operator at the Leyendecker Plant Science Research Center. He was preceded in death by his wife, ISABEL "CHAVELITA" RODRIGUEZ NAJERA.
Don Chava is survived by his children, Elva Gonzalez Salomon and husband Antonio Gonzalez, Maria Estela Salomon, Salvador Salomon II, Maria Olivia Carrillo Najera and husband Ramon Gabriel Silva Carrillo, Mario Navarrette and wife Angie Rodriguez-Navarrette; his ten grandchildren, Flor Gonzalez and husband Omar Martinez, Armando Gonzalez and wife Barbarita Bustamante, Veronica Salomon, Erika and husband Alberto Martinez, Lorena Salomon and husband Jorge Nevarez, Salvador “Chacho” Salomon III and wife Ana, Crystal and husband Joshua Archuleta, Johnny R. Villa, Mario I. Navarrette, Jr., and Arabella Navarrette; 15 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers will be Antonio Gonzalez, Salvador “Chacho” Salomon III, Mario Navarrette Jr., Johnny R. Villa, Armando Gonzalez Jr., and Alberto Martinez. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Omar Martinez and Joshua Archuleta.
Don Chava will be loved, cherished, and remembered by the legacy of hard work, sacrifice, and commitment. He served as an example and inspired many people throughout the Mesilla Valley and across the country and in his native country, Mexico, with his devotion to his family, friends, and those in need. He changed our lives and touched our hearts. He is loved and will be missed dearly.
Visitation for Don Chava will begin at 5 PM on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, followed by the Prayer Vigil at 7 PM at Getz Funeral Home located at 1410 E. Bowman Ave, Las Cruces, NM 88001. The Mass will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at 11 AM, in the Basilica of San Albino in Mesilla. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow, where he will be laid to rest in the San Albino Cemetery.
