Rex Mitchell, 86, of Bloomington, passed away on Friday, November 2, 2018 at Autumn Hills surrounded by his loving family.
Rex was born October 31, 1932 in Smithville and was the son of the late Burl and Iva (Reynolds) Mitchell. Rex was a Homebuilder for many years but his love was for racing. Rex drove a Sprint Car in the 60's and 70's and was a local racing legend known as the "King of the Indiana Outlaws". He also drove motorcycles, enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, camping and snowmobiling. He was a HAM radio operator and liked country music and old westerns.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary (Rumple) Mitchell along with their daughter and son-in-law Trudy and Bob Wright, grandchildren and their spouses, Carrie and Dan Benick, Christy and Ben DuBois and Eric and Jessica Wright, great grandchildren, Grant, Claire, Peyton, Katie and Matthew. Rex is also survived by his younger brother and his wife Denny and Jenny Mitchell, niece Melanie Mitchell and nephew Michael Mitchell.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation for Rex will be from 2-6 pm Sunday, November 4, 2018 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. Bloomington.
Services will be 2:00 pm Monday at The Funeral Chapel with Pastor Stephen Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Smithville Cemetery.
We will forever be grateful for the love and care Rex received from the nurses and staff at Autumn Hills.
