Obituary for Carl Robert Gerber

Age 91
Of White Bear Lake
Preceded in death by wife, Jacquelyn; parents Ernest and Martha, sisters, Melanie Maddox and Margaret Brown, brothers, Walter, Ernest, Herman, Franz, Fritz, and Robert. Survived by children Joe (Lisa) and Meg (Ken) Spangler; grandchildren Kathryn and Joey. Carl served in the U.S. Navy on a ship during WWII. He married Jackie Cliff on Valentine's Day, 1954. He was the President of Lakewood Community College and worked in the State Community College System for over 20 years. Carl was an avid baseball fan (and a player). He loved his family and spent as much time with his grandchildren as he could. Memorial Service 11 AM Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at REDEEMER LUTHERAN CHURCH, 3770 Bellaire Avenue, WBL. Visitation 1 hour before service at church. Interment Lakeview Cemetery, Mahtomedi. Memorials preferred Century College Foundation.

I worked with Dr. Gerber for many years at Lakewood and even sat on opposite sides of the table with him during teacher contract negotiations. I always thought Carl had a just right amount of humor and a genuine sense of humility. I liked him. My thoughts go to his family.

I first met Carl when I interviewed for a faculty position at Lakewood Community College (now Century College). I was fortunate to be selected. Carl was a superb college president; smart, funny, kind, and firm when he needed to be. He was dedicated to making Lakewood a place that was good for employees and especially for educating students. He was a great role model and will be greatly missed. My condolences to his family.
